Overcome Writer’s Block: Type Twenty Words

Ask any writer.

Writing anything – a novel, a poem, this blog – can be a stupefying undertaking.

First draft?

Second draft?

Words sometimes won’t come. So ofttimes we choose to find ways to keep them from coming at all.

Anything we do will work: sweeping the floor, getting the mail, straightening the oriental rug, petting the dog.

So, if you suffer from procrastination when it comes to writing, you’re not alone.

Every writer I know struggles with the first few words. It’s the first twenty words that are the problem.

Solution? Start typing. Now.

Get over the bump of the first twenty words and then things will start to flow.

Type twenty words.

Even with only one finger of only one hand, pecking it out.

You can pet the dog with the other hand at the same time.

Soon, the dog will be forgotten as the world of the story opens up.

All happens with only twenty words.
