Writing Thrilling Action Scenes

Action scenes fall flat for one reason most writers overlook. In this 90-minute workshop, Clay Stafford, founder of the Killer Nashville International Writers’ Conference, will explain why explosions, chases, and fight scenes mean nothing if readers don’t care about the character at the center of the action. During his talk, which includes an in-class exercise, Clay will break down how emotional investment turns movement into tension, raises the stakes, and makes every punch, chase, and risk feel personal. Want better action scenes? Start with your character.

Saturday, September 19, 8:15 A.M.–9:15 A.M.

Publishing Isn’t a Rulebook, But a Game of Strategy

Writers are often told that publishing success comes from following the rules, but real progress happens when writers understand how the system actually works. In this practical, eye-opening session, Clay Stafford reframes publishing as a game of strategy rather than a rigid checklist. Attendees will learn the difference between playing the game and understanding it, why many careers stall because of positioning rather than craft, and how long-term thinking and thoughtful innovation can create real opportunity. Participants will leave with a clearer sense of how publishing operates behind the scenes and how strategic decisions can turn uncertainty into forward momentum.
