The Power of Writing: Understanding Yourself
At its most basic, writing is nothing more than putting words in order. The order of those words will depend upon you: your skills, your training, your innate ear, and ultimately when you have mastered all your skills, your voice.
Writing takes us places we never expect to go. We tell stories as much to ourselves as we do to others who might read what we write. For me, I write to make sense of things that I do not know or understand. When I publish, I share that conversation, dialogue, or argument with others so they can either agree or disagree, but ultimately find their own way or voice, as well. That’s what we do as writers.
There is really nothing magical to writing. It’s simply putting one word in front of the other and then, after it is finished, going back to see if it makes any sense. When it does make sense, great; when it doesn’t, we edit and fix it, clarifying it not even so much on the page, but in our mind.
And that’s what writing and editing and publishing are all about. It’s sharing with ourselves; it’s sharing with others.
So, I’ll write it again: there is really nothing magical about writing. There is no formula. There is no right or wrong. Just do it. Explore. Play. Question. Write now and see how clearer your world becomes, how your own problems and solutions come into view, and how you can find an interesting way to entertain yourself and others as you seek ultimately to understand and illuminate the things most important to you.
