The Power and Influence of Writers
If I had to choose between the two most powerful professionals on the planet, I’d choose teachers and writers, and both could be one-in-the-same.
Writers carry and claim a matchless influence and leadership with their ability to distill the essence and values of everything from individual mind-wanderings into relationships into society, from the core of the earth to the ends of the galaxy.
Writers provide internal meanings that not even science, philosophy, or theology can match (except when philosophers, theologians, or scientists also happen to be writers, and when they are, they can be life-changing).
Writers of all kinds, with dexterity, create works that peel away the exteriors of the world we live in, revealing what is the essence beneath.
Writers laud the good and the accomplishments of those of past, present, and future.
Writers challenge the norms of our society, the purveyors – sometimes single-handedly – of future change, beliefs, and concepts.
When writers step up to the responsibility of their potential, whether they are writing fiction, nonfiction, or poetry, whether they are writing historically, present day, or scientifically, they hold up a mirror to who we are as humans and the potential of all of us cowering beneath.
Writers, sometimes even for all their contrariness, open the floor for conversations and reflections that reveal the best and worst of all of us, and maybe, when they’re ambitious, writers will go the extra step to show (fiction) or tell (nonfiction) the paths needed for correction, inspiration, and courage.
If I were stranded on a deserted island with only one thing, I would hope it would be a writer (and enough food and water for both of us).
When you write today, ask yourself what kind of writer you want to be.
And then maybe, just maybe, you’ll decide to change the world.
