The Importance of Community in Writing

Every day I wake up with a passion for writing, driven not solely by the words I compose, but rather by the community of people with which I share my world. Unlike many writers who find the craft of writing to be a solitary and lonesome pursuit, my experience of writing is one that is deeply collaborative and fulfilling.

What I find most invigorating about my existence is the freedom to express myself alongside those who are just as passionate about the craft. You find this more in the film world, I think, than normally in the world of literature, but I think my film-world mentality serves me better. My love for writing thrives amid spirited discussion, where all ideas are valid, and the best ones rise to the top. This, after all, is what drives us all: to create something truly remarkable.

To those seeking to embark on a single day of writing, my experience is clear: don't live your life in isolation. The writing process is only enhanced by a deep sense of community, one where you can draw inspiration and insight from the talented individuals around you.

Think of yourself as part of a team, one that is invested not only in your own aspirations, but your aspirations also in those of others. By opening yourself up to collaboration and the joys of sharing your work with others and them with you, you create a life that is not just fulfilling, but enriching and inspiring in ways that writing words alone could never express.

So as you pursue your writing, always remember that it is the people around you who will ultimately make your journey worthwhile: fellow writers, your family, editors, publicists, publishers, attorneys, librarians, and – of course - readers. Let them be your guides and allies, your sounding board, and your support network. For in the end, it is not just the words that matter, but the community of creative individuals that makes the journey worthwhile.

We need each other. Invite others in.
