Latest Social Media Stats

Communication used to be slow, though personal. I would tell a friend something and say the same thing to another friend. They might tell another friend if it seemed tragic or humorous enough to share. Social media changed all that. With a few clicks, we can tell everybody, and then they can share our news with their friends. I can also get an update on everyone close to me with a quick scroll. To me, that is amazing. Social media has undeniably brought us all together.

So how many friends can you have? Let’s take a look (sorted from highest to lowest impact).

Facebook: 3.049 billion monthly users
YouTube: 2.49 billion monthly users
Instagram: 2 billion monthly users
TikTok: 1 billion monthly users
X: 550 million monthly users
LinkedIn: 310 million monthly users

Right off the bat, you can see where you need to be and, depending upon your content, where you need to focus your attention. What about demographics? Let’s look at the Internet.

Facebook has 56.3% male users and 43.7% female users. The largest age group of US Facebook users is between 25 and 34.

According to recent surveys, almost 90% of teenagers use YouTube. When we analyze this data, we can see that the age group that consumes the most YouTube content is 25-34, accounting for 21.30% of the total user base. This is followed by the 35-44 age group (17.50%) and the 18-24 age group (15.50%). These age groups are particularly important for marketers to target, as they represent a significant portion of YouTube’s user base.

According to Social Pilot, Instagram is primarily popular among people under the age of 34, with 70% of Instagram users in this age group. Within this demographic, 7% are aged 13-17, 30% are aged 18-24, and 33% are aged 25-34. The remaining 30% of Instagram users are aged 35 or above, with 16% being between the ages of 35-44, 8% aged 45-54, 4% aged 55-64, and 2% over 65 years old. The largest age group among Instagram users is those aged 25-34, who comprise 31.7% of the total number of Instagram users.

60% of TikTok users are aged between 16-24, while 26% are aged between 25-44. Overall, 80% of users are between 16 and 34 years old.

According to a report, X is expected to have 51.6 million users by 2024, a decline from the peak of 58.9 million in 2022. This decline could be attributed to various factors, such as the emergence of new platforms or changes in user preferences. The report also reveals that X’s US users are distributed as follows: 19.0% are between the ages of 18 and 24, 22.1% are between 25 and 34, and 18.3% are between 35 and 44.

60% of LinkedIn users are between 25 and 34 years old, straddling Gen Z and millennials.

This helps us narrow down our target audience even more. In social media marketing, your target audience refers to the specific group of people you want to reach with your content. Each of us will have a different platform that works best for who we are and the information that we are sharing. Understanding your target audience’s demographics, interests, and online behavior is crucial for developing effective social media strategies.

What does all this mean? You should use targeted (or several targeted) social media platforms to make new friends and share your information. In the context of social media marketing, ‘making new friends’ refers to expanding your professional network and connecting with potential customers or clients. You don’t need to be on all of them, but you should definitely have a profile on the ones that are specific to your demographic.

And don’t forget: always use your name as the profile, e.g., @claystafford or ClayStafford. Using your real name as your profile can enhance your professional image and credibility on social media. It allows others to easily identify and connect with you, which can be beneficial for networking and career advancement.

One crucial aspect of social media presence is reserving your name as a profile. If you haven’t done so yet, take action now. This simple step can make a significant difference in your career. It’s a proactive measure that ensures your online identity is secure and consistent, enhancing your professional image.
